It has been a mesmerizing one-and-a-half-year journey of learning the beautiful and intricate art of Kerala Mural. My weekends would begin with eager anticipation—watching, listening, and learning from the ever inspiring Banish Sir. Every Saturday morning felt like a spiritual journey, as I joined the class and was transported to our Bharat Bhoomi, where Banish Sir, seated in his studio within a temple in God’s Own Country—Kerala—would passionately introduce us to this centuries-old traditional art form. With his expansive knowledge, exceptional artistic skill, and boundless energy, he brought the art of Kerala Mural to life. His deep enthusiasm for teaching often made him lose track of time, and we students, immersed in watching his graceful strokes and vibrant colors, would forget ours as well. I fondly recall several sessions where he patiently corrected each one of us multiple times, never once giving up until he saw our progress align with his expectations. Those moments were powerful reminders of how consistent practice, guided by a dedicated teacher, leads to true growth. Words fall short in expressing my gratitude for everything Banish Sir has given us—not just art techniques, but lessons in discipline, patience, and devotion to craft. Thank you Sir, for your commitment, your generosity in sharing your knowledge, and your belief in each of us. I carry forward not just what I learned, but also the inspiration to keep practicing and growing. Thank you once again, from the bottom of my heart.

It has been an absolute privilege to study and explore the rich and wonderful world of the Kerala mural artform under the tutelage of Shri Binish Lakshmanan. He is as exceptional as artist, as he is a guru. One may find many teachers who will guide with techniques and such, but having someone who is willing to learn and experiment as they teach, and also encourage the students to apply the techniques of a traditional artform in non-traditional ways, is truly what sets them apart as a guru, versus a mere teacher. Throughout our course, and now even beyond, our incessant queries to our sir have always been met with the same infinite patience and the same ultra attention to detail. I used to pride on my concentration on my work, but watching sir as he meticulously draws each curve, each brush stroke, each clean line, over and over again, has taught me a lot more than simply the kerala mural techniques. What I truly admire about sir is that he always encourages us to do things slowly and with care, and to never rush it. He asks us to visualize our potential paintings as scenes playing out before us, because that’ll help us relate to the characters we want to draw. He never hesitates to tell us when we go wrong, but he also always tells us how we can make it right. And just like no mistake is ever dismissed, every good work too is always appreciated wholeheartedly. What an enriching and deeply satisfying experience this course with sir has been. If I could, I would do it all over again, without changing a thing, except maybe do my own practice a lot more regularly.
