Italics Calligraphy

Italic calligraphy is one of the most renowned scripts in the history of the Latin alphabet, also known as Cancellaresca. It originated, in part, out of a desire for practicality by Niccolò de' Niccoli, driven by his extensive study of ancient manuscripts and the many copies he created. Niccoli began to experiment with slanted lettering in his reproductions, and this distinctive style was later adopted by Italian printers when they first introduced italic type.

About the course

This course helps participants dive into the vibrant Italics Calligraphy using a parallel pen. Practice basic calligraphy strokes which include: 1. Downstrokes: Vertical strokes that should be thicker, using the broad nib’s edge. 2. Upstrokes: Thin strokes that are made with the nib’s tip. 3. Curves: Smooth, rounded strokes, which are important in Italic letters. 4. Connecting strokes: Learn how to smoothly connect letters using flowing curves. 5. Practice writing short words and then full sentences to gain control over letter spacing and alignment. 5. Experimenting with flourishes 6. Thumbnail sketch and developing composition of a sentence. A BONUS SESSION too is included.
