Led by a Padma Shri awardee, this exclusive two-day workshop offers an in-depth exploration of Godna, a unique and ancient style of Madhubani art rooted in tattoo-inspired tribal patterns. Participants will learn to create traditional motifs and compositions in the rustic aesthetic of the Godna tradition. The workshop will cover the cultural history, symbolism, and storytelling elements associated with Godna, connecting participants to its rich Mithila heritage. Attendees will complete a hands-on project under the direct guidance of the master artist, creating their own original artwork in the authentic Godna style. Open to art enthusiasts of all skill levels, the course provides a rare opportunity to learn from a living legend and engage with one of India’s oldest folk art forms.

Padma Shri Shivan Paswan 

Padma Shri Shivan Paswan is a renowned Madhubani artist from Bihar, India, celebrated for his mastery in the traditional Godna (tattoo-inspired) style of painting. Hailing from a Dalit background, his journey as an artist is a powerful story of perseverance and passion.  Shivan Paswan's work preserves the rich heritage of the Mithila region, combining ancient motifs with social narratives. Honored with the Padma Shri—one of India’s highest civilian awards—he has brought national and international recognition to this rare folk art form. His teachings continue to inspire a new generation of artists to embrace and sustain traditional practices.

Terms & Conditions

- Login details for the live session will be sent one day before the workshops, upon completion of registration. - The workshop can be attended by participants 10 and above and younger participants, if accompanied by an adult. - Workshops are attended by participants of all skill levels thus the pace of the sessions will be moderated to meet everyone’s comfort. - The recording will be shared for a limited period of time, after the workshop is complete. - The artists might speak only in regional language. However, the session would be effectively moderated in English for everyone’s comfort. - The workshop will be conducted on Zoom. Please download the app on your laptop or tablet as it is easier to follow on a larger screen as opposed to a small phone screen. - A temporary Whatsapp group will be created for easy communication with the participants. Please download Whatsapp on your mobile phone devices to stay upbeat. Link to the Whatsapp group will be sent in an email, post registration. The group will be deleted few days after completion of the workshop. - Class is non-refundable and non-transferable – please do not share the link and join the waiting room ten minutes before as the sessions start right on time.
